Burn Baby Burn! Flame Weeding Video - Carolyn CAREs

Burn Baby Burn! Flame Weeding Video

I rode along with Jonathan while he was flame weeding the corn. If the video doesn’t answer your questions, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Author: Carolyn Olson

I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. In 1988, I married my best friend and moved to the farm. Jonathan and I have three daughters, one son-in-law, and the most adorable granddaughter! I love life on the farm, and wouldn't trade it for anything!

  1. danni mcgriffith – Oklahoma – Danni McGriffith writes somewhat politically incorrect, realistic Christian fiction from her home in Oklahoma where she and her husband ranch/farm. A homeschool teacher of her three sons for sixteen years, she finally graduated the last one and retired from that endeavor. Unwilling to waste all those years of english classes, however, she writes about her lifelong love of horses, farming, and ranching, bringing those things to life in stories reflecting her reverence for Jesus Christ and family. Danni is the author of Agnes Campbell's Hat, a historical novel, and The Cedar Tree, the first book in the Love Is Not Enough series. She is currently working on book two of the series, tentatively scheduled for publication sometime in the spring/summer of 2014. She also blogs From the Ranch Pen at dannimcgriffith.com, posting her regular take on events out on the homeplace with her tongue firmly in her cheek and her foot taking up the rest of the space in her mouth.

That was a super cool video. I did not know anybody could weed with a torch on purpose. Thanks for sharing that

I will be out taking photos of the fields tomorrow. The corn is definitely growing fast right now, so the fields are turning green again in a hurry. I will attach the photos onto the end of this entry.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I am in the process of converting 220 acres of corn/beans to organic in southern MN (Waseca County). Can you tell me who manufactured your flame cultivator and the spacing of your rows?
    Thank you,
    Mike Hill

Thanks for stopping by my blog, Mike.

Dennis Luettke, an organic dairy farmer near Wells, MN manufactured our flame weeder. We bought an old anhydrous bar, and brought it down to Dennis for the burner kits and set up. We are in the process of converting a used sprayer into a flame weeder, mostly because of the frame style and wheel placement. We use 22″ rows on our corn and beans.

  3. Very nicely done. Can you direct me to a company that makes this flame equipment? We are just getting started in the organic arena with 100 acres.

Thank you! Where are you located? We had a guy in Southeast Minnesota make ours. We have since built a bigger one, and I hope to have some GoPro video of that one in action this summer.

The cost per acre depends on LP prices, and weed pressure. I believe our average is between $15-25/acre.
