Fun Fact Friday – The Hatfields and McCoys

We’ve been touring Pikeville and Pike County, Kentucky for the past few days. Our daughter and her fiance will be moving here following their wedding, when he begins medical school. This area is full of history, but the most interesting to us this visit was the Hatfield & McCoy family feud. We drove part way through the driving tour, on winding mountain roads that are not suited for prairie dwellers like me! The area is absolutely beautiful, and it was easy to picture the places that were described on the CD narration. We made one stop at the Blackberry Post Office, where the feuds began.

The lesson that we came away with, was the importance of forgiveness. All of this might have been avoided with good communication, and a willingness to forgive. We can’t let past hurts and wrongs fester in our hearts. Nothing good ever comes from it.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:37 NIV

I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. In 1988, I married my best friend and moved to the farm. Jonathan and I have three daughters, one son-in-law, and the most adorable granddaughter! I love life on the farm, and wouldn't trade it for anything!

  1. Hi Carolyn…

I fell upon your blog as I was in search of contact info for your farm. My husband had a question he wanted to run past Jonathan. I understand he is probably a very busy guy. Would it be possible to do so by phone or email?

We read about your family in the Broadcaster and enjoyed the write up!

    Thanks for your time 😉

    1. Thank you! Jonathan will send Adam an email – it’s the best way to communicate right now. 🙂

  2. You are so on the mark about forgiveness. Digging up or dwelling on the past does absolutely no good. We are blessed when we let God help us through to forgiveness.

    1. The area where we were was pretty modern…but we were told stories of people that are still pretty backwards. A waitress told us about a village that was recently found where all of the people still spoke old English. 🙂

        1. Apparently, this town of 6000 swells to well over 100,000 for a few days during their Hillbilly Days. That would be a sight!

          1. Exactly! 🙂 When we talked with our daughter’s landlords, they said nobody can really drive anywhere in town. It’s just packed with hillbilly’s, and hillbilly wanna-be’s.

          2. It’s April 24-26th. Not good timing for us…too close to wheat seeding.

          3. The event itself is called Hillbilly Days. You really need to Google Hillbilly Days, Pikeville. There’s a video that will help to explain it. 🙂
